Redefining Creativity: Embracing the Art of Living Fully

Challenging Narrow Definitions of Creativity

The concept of creativity and what it means has taken up a bit of headspace lately. I’m currently reading "Big Magic” by Elizabeth Gilbert, a guide to embracing creativity within, and have also come across various inspiring posts on Instagram.

I've often been told, “Oh, you can draw, you are so creative.” While I appreciate the compliment, it’s a bit of a narrow definition of creativity. What about those of us who are makers, problem solvers, storytellers, comedians, or even those who practice creative accounting? I know so many ‘non-artists’ who I rate as highly creative people.

Creativity in Everyday Life

Take my mother-in-law, for instance. She knits and crochets the most unbelievable blankets but constantly claims she isn't creative. This couldn't be further from the truth. Her ability to transform yarn into intricate, beautiful patterns is all about her inner creativity. Additionally, her work connects to a greater purpose and giving back, as she donates all these blankets to a worthy cause.

Expanding Our View of Creativity

Just because someone can or can't draw doesn't define their creativity. That’s exclusive and misses the point. And so I think we need to change this narrative - let’s appreciate creativity in all its forms and encourage each other to uncover and express the unique treasures we all carry inside.

A Personal Commitment to Fostering Creativity

Ten years ago, at my goddaughter's baby shower, we were asked to commit to something meaningful - a promise to the unborn child so to speak. With heartfelt conviction, I pledged to encourage creativity. At the time, it took the form of play and craft activities but as the years have passed, I’ve realised that creativity has allowed so much more to grow and develop - it’s been about building life-long relationships, about commitment, and friendship, all things that make living life a whole lot more meaningful.

Let’s Redefine What It Means to Be Creative

As Elizabeth Gilbert eloquently states, the paths and outcomes of creative living will vary wildly from person to person. But one thing is certain: a creative life is an amplified life. It’s bigger, happier, more expansive, and infinitely more interesting.

Celebrating the Art of Living Fully

So let's celebrate the beauty in our differences and the endless possibilities within each of us. Living a creative life isn't just about making art; it's about embracing the art of living fully, with passion and with meaning - let's live it to the fullest.
