7 Good Reasons Why Winter Deserves a Second Chance

Let's be honest, living a charmed existence with 9 months of summer in South Africa makes winter feel like a shock to the system.

If you're not a cold-weather person (like me), hibernation might seem like your only option.

Initially, this newsletter was going to be titled "7 Reasons Why I Don’t Like Winter" (cold mornings, living in a puffer jacket, short days - the list is endless). But since we are in hibernation mode, here are some things worth appreciating.

1. Orchid Inspiration

Turning a windowsill into a hot house or nursery is rewarding. Right now, three orchids are flowering, and another three are about to. There’s something special about nurturing a plant to produce such showcase-worthy blooms. And yes, talking to your plants does help.

2. Daily Sketch Practice

Orchids are a great source of inspiration for quick sketches. Try drawing on carbon paper so you can’t see what you’re creating – it takes the pressure off and often leads to the best results. Other seed pods like gooseberry and jacaranda are also structurally interesting.

3. Book Binding

Who doesn’t love a good notebook? Books are tactile and personal, perfect for holding thoughts and ideas. Also, learning a new skill is a whole lot of fun. Join Open Studios at Kim Sacks Gallery, where Maia Lehr-Sacks teaches drawing, paper folding, and bookbinding. Visit www.kimsacks.com for more information.

4. Cats

Even if you didn't grow up with cats, they can become beloved members of the family. They’re literally winter’s hot water bottles, keeping you warm and looking super cute in the winter sun.

5. Light & Shadows

Winter light and shadows have their own uniqueness. The dappled light is gentle, and the shadows are softer, making for great photo opportunities.

6. Time

Winter allows thoughts to formulate and new bodies of work to develop. This reflective period has led to new projects like "Making Sense of it All" and the "Ghost" series. Have a look:

7. Comfort

Turns out, there is an upside to hibernating and leaning into what each season holds. Winter brings a certain comfort and a slower pace that's worth appreciating.

Until September, stay warm.
